They do all three events on the auto road, foot race, bicycle race, and they have an early(mid May) and later(sometime in September) auto hill climbs up the road. Most of the road has been repaved over the past three years. The very top mile or soand the bottom .25 mile hasn't been repaved yet. I just walked up the bottom 2.5 of 3.75 miles of the road this morning. I live about 30 minutes from the drop. After watching and walking the MCGF course last year I consider MCGF to be a beginner run. Ascutney is not a beginner run, not in my opinion. I would ride it by myself but I still don't feel comfortable riding something like Ascutney with other riders around, I defintely want comfort room on some of those corners. Its quite steep(average 12-13% with extended stretches at 18-19%), quite technical(4-5 180 degree turns, three within a .25-.33 mile with two of those being separated by 50 feet), and it is also a narrow road(18 feet wide). I'm interested to see how many they have on the start line at one time. I have my guesses but it shall be interesting to see. There are only three flat stretchs on the road, the longest being around .1 mile and the shortest of the three being the 50 foot stretch between the final two 180 degree turns. I may be wrong in my guessing, but I tend to think that this is probably the steepest, mostly technical drop in the east other than the Mount Washington Auto Road, which all of it isn't paved and it has many weather(wind) issues on it that has caused delays and cancellations of the foot and bicycle races in the past. I never saw the Maine course so I can't speak of it but I do remember many years back seeing the WV, Madison, IN, and Demons of the Downhill courses. From what I remember this is steeper and more technical than any of them. It also has variable length potential to it, it's a 3.7 mile long drop from the very top, just the top .75-1 mile hasn't been repaved.

There is quite a bit of riding potential on both sides of the Connecticut River for riding on Sunday if anyone wants to stick around. Essentially all my riding has been within 30-45 minutes of Ascutney and there is no shortage of drops for anything from beginners to advanced riders. There is even a real nice sweet 5 minute long cruiser drop just on the back side of Ascutney that I ran several times last fall. I had to learn sometime why a headrest is needed on a sled, LMAO!!!

Rumors are floating around that another rider/racer is planning to walk the road this weekend and have a look at it, it should be interesting to see what he thinks after seeing the road. Hopefully I'll be there with him when he walks it, since the road is closed to auto traffic until the park opens on May 18.
